Two Chapter Brothers Attend National Convention
by Andrew Owen

2012 Convention LogoOn July 11 through 15, 2012, the Fraternity held its triennial convention in Orlando, Florida, where more Sinfonians gathered than in any convention in the history of the Sinfonia. More than 800 brothers were in attendance. Two of them were Brothers Steven Hugley (Theta Upsilon, 2008) and Andrew Owen (Theta Upsilon, 2006, Province 24 Deputy Governor). Brother Hugley played lead alto saxophone in the convention jazz band, the 1898 Jazz Orchestra, and Brother Owen sang low bass in the convention chorus, the Men of Song Choir. Both had extensive solos in their respective concerts.

The momentous event was the culmination of a triennium of fraternal development. The fraternity introduced a new edition of the Themes for Brotherhood probationary membership textbook, which is now completely different in character. In the course of legislation, the Constitution and General Regulations for Collegiate Chapters was updated into one document, the Constitution and Bylaws, which is much easier to navigate and is more logically organized.

New Retreat Center Artist RenderingOne of the most important announcements of the Convention was the introduction of the Lyrecrest Fund, which sets out to raise money to build a new retreat center for the National Headquarters in Evansville, Indiana. Within the first two hours of the announcement, over $131,000 was raised for the effort. The goal for the entire project, which builds this building and renovates the current ones, is $2,000,000. Any money donated to this cause will help make this place a reality.

The convention ritual, which was the largest ritual in Sinfonian history, initiated Brothers Carlisle Floyd and David Holsinger into the national honorary Alpha Alpha Chapter. Brother Owen directly participated in this ritual. At the following gala on Saturday, Brother Floyd was awarded the Casey Lutton Man of Music Award, which was presented to him by Brother Sherrill Milnes. The following morning, there was a memorial service for all brothers who had died in the previous three years, including six members of Theta Upsilon: Bill Ammons, James Craig, Henry Martin, Kenneth Newman, George Muns, and Stephen Simmons.

The week was one of tremendous brotherhood and revelry, allowing brothers from around the nation to strengthen each other's integrity and compassion. The attendees agreed that this life-changing convention really showed how there is no fraternity in this world like Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
